‘There is a crack, a crack in everything that’s how the light gets in’

‘There is a crack in everything that’s how the light gets in’ – I think about this line from ‘Anthem’, Leonard Cohen’s extraordinary song often. I read somewhere that he thought of this song one of his best, representative of his life’s work.

This idea of something cracked letting in beauty (or letting it out) isn’t new. It exists in various other traditions, including texts by Rumi who said that the wound was where light entered us and the Japanese art of kintsugi, where broken vessels are mended with gold, silver or platinum.

Today I saw a shaft of light in the cold morning sky, blue in the grey. It made the clouds around it look silver, and I saw beauty and hope.

There have been many times that I have seen myself as broken – and people I love and work with often tell me they see themselves in similar ways.

We are not broken, but beautiful.

This doesn’t mean we don’t have days when life is tough, we do.

What may damage us can also shape us and make us the extraordinary resilient people we are.
