I’m pleased to introduce myself. I’m Hannah Storm, a consultant and keynote speaker, with a strong journalism background, specialising in authentic leadership, media safety and mental health.
I have worked with some of the world’s leading media organisations, in dozens of countries, and I’d like to help your company benefit from what I’ve learned, taught and shared. I have an extensive network of contacts, natural empathy ,and the ability to speak several languages,. These have enabled me to build connections and consensus across the industry.
Those I have supported include major media organisations, public service broadcasters, traditional legacy media houses, global agencies, as well as digital, hybrid newsrooms, and small community-led teams.
My ability to facilitate conversations means I helps create inclusive spaces where everyone feels safe, if they choose, to share their experiences of mental health, and I have run these successful sessions for companies around the world.
A passionate advocate for authentic leadership, I have significant expertise and experience working with individuals and teams to recognise the value of empathy and the power of normalising conversations around wellbeing. And I offer managers training to support their own wellbeing and that of their team, even when this includes difficult conversations.
A sought-after public speaker and event host, I am able to share my own journey of moving from complex trauma to compassionate leadership.
In 2021, I founded Headlines Network, which promotes more open conversations about mental health in journalism, through workshops, tips and a podcast.
I am also the former CEO of the International News Safety Institute, where I worked from 2010 to 2019, and the Ethical Journalism Network, and a sought-after writer and commentator.
I co-authored the first study into moral injury and the media with Professor Anthony Feinstein, for the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism, which also published ‘The Kidnapping of Journalists’ which she co-wrote. I came up with the idea for, and co-edited, ‘No Woman’s Land: On the Frontlines with Female Reporters’, the first book dedicated to the safety of women journalists.’ I have written and been interviewed extensively at the intersection of gender, mental health, physical and online safety, leadership and empathy,
I began my career at Reuters, as a graduate trainee, before working for The Times, and ITV News. I spent several years as a freelance journalist in Latin America and Haiti, mainly working for the BBC. I have also worked for Channel 4 News, and Oxfam, specialising for the latter in communications and logistics around disaster and the climate crisis, and a consultant, trainer and speech-writer for the United Nations.
Most recently, I authored a book for Routledge: a practical guide for journalists on mental health, to be published in early 2024. Outside my media and mental health work, I am an award-winning author of flash fiction, teach writing for wellbeing, and am an accomplished marathon runner and duathlete.
